WSO to Carney: If India Is ‘Family,’ Where Do Sikh Canadians Fit?

Ottawa (March 2, 2026): The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) expresses disappointment with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s comments in New Delhi  where he stood beside Prime Minister Narendra Modi and declared, “We are one family.” He also invited Modi to visit Canada.

If Prime Minister Carney considers the Government of India part of Canada’s “family,” Sikh Canadians are left wondering where we fit in that definition.

The comments come after a story in The Globe and Mail revealed that officials operating out of the Indian consulate in Vancouver gathered information that assisted in the plot to assassinate Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar, with intelligence allegedly passed to operatives connected to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The reporting further links the operation to RAW officer Vikash Yadav, who has also been named in a U.S. indictment in a separate assassination plot.

At the same time, Prime Minister Mark Carney has refused to take a single question from Canadian journalists during his trip to India. His first scheduled press conference was cancelled, and Canadians have been given no opportunity to hear him address these serious developments.

Prior to Carney’s visit, a senior government official claimed that India is no longer linked to violent crimes and transnational repression in Canada. The claim has been refuted by CSIS which confirmed that India remains one of the  “main perpetrators of foreign interference and espionage against Canada”

India continues to deny any wrongdoing. Just this weekend, India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, once again insisted that interference by Indian officials “never happened.”

WSO President Danish Singh stated:

“Prime Minister Carney stood beside Prime Minister Narendra Modi today and declared, ‘We are one family!’

Families do not assassinate, extort, or intimidate one another. If Prime Minister Carney considers the Government of India part of Canada’s “family,” Sikh Canadians are left wondering where we fit in that definition.

We do not consider those accused of directing violence and transnational repression against our community, including individuals publicly named by Canadian officials, such India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, to be members of our family.

After eight months of so-called 'high-level dialogue' between Canada and India, we have new evidence linking Indian officials to the assassination of a Canadian citizen, continued denials from India, and ongoing police warnings issued to Sikh activists and their families.

What has this engagement achieved? From the community’s perspective, things have gotten worse, not better.

WSO calls on Prime Minister Carney to immediately address Canadians and clearly explain what accountability has been secured from India, if any. Prime Minister Carney cannot indefinitely avoid answering these questions.”

WSO is a non-profit national organization with a mandate to promote and protect the interests of Canadian Sikhs as well as to promote and advocate for the protection of human rights of all individuals.
