Ottawa – (December 16, 2013) The World Sikh Organization of Canada held its biennial convention on Saturday December 14th in Surrey, British Columbia, where members of WSO gathered from across Canada to reflect on the achievements of the past two years and to chart the course for the future. The event concluded with the selection of WSO’s Executive for the 2014-2015 term. Dr. Amritpal Singh Shergill was unanimously chosen to serve as President and head the organization.
Dr. Shergill is a well-known psychologist based in Surrey, British Columbia. Dr. Shergill received his doctorate in 1997, from UBC, where he has also taught as a sessional instructor. He served as Director of Operations for Columbia Health Centre in Langley, BC, and has served on several boards and commissions such as: CARF (Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities); the National Ethno-Cultural Advisory Committee for Corrections Canada; and a Board Member for Options Community Services Society. Dr. Shergill is a regular guest on radio and television, speaking on topics related to mental health, family, and social issues.

In a groundbreaking move, a majority of the WSO’s new executive members are young professionals born and raised in Canada.
In his inaugural speech to the WSO convention, Dr. Shergill spoke about the important role that WSO has played in advancing human rights and religious freedoms for all Canadians.
Dr. Shergill said, “I am truly honoured to have been selected to serve as President of the WSO. The WSO has a proud tradition of advancing human rights and serving as a strong voice for Canadian Sikhs. I feel privileged to lead this dynamic and vibrant group of professionals. For almost 30 years WSO has played an instrumental role towards building this great nation. As we draw on our past to guide and inspire us, we envision a future filled with freedom and equality for all. With the support of the community I am confident we will continue to make an important contribution.”
The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) is a non-profit organization with a mandate to promote and protect the interests of Canadian Sikhs as well as to promote and advocate for the protection of human rights for all individuals, irrespective of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, and social and economic status.
