WSO Hails Canadian Soccer Association Turban Directive

Ottawa (April 15, 2013):  The World Sikh Organization of Canada welcomes a directive by the Canadian Soccer Association to soccer associations and referees across the country that Sikh players who wear the turban can be accommodated on the soccer pitch. 

CSA General Secretary Peter Montopoli, has advised the WSO that in light of the decision of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to allow headscarves for players, and in response to inquiries by referees, the CSA Board of Directors has confirmed that “referees may, until further notice, extend this ruling to the wearing of turbans/patkas/keski.”

Notice of this decision was sent out to the CSA’s provincial and territorial members across Canada late last week. 

The CSA’s decision opens the doors to Sikh players in Quebec who had been excluded from soccer leagues because of the turban. 

Although soccer leagues across Canada already accommodate the wearing of the turban, it was reported in June 2012 that 17 year old Aneel Samra and other Sikh players in the LaSalle Minor Soccer Association in Quebec had been told that they would not be permitted to play because of their religiously mandated turbans. 

WSO had been working on an ongoing basis with the CSA and other stakeholders to ensure that the turban would be accommodated for this coming soccer season.

WSO’s Quebec Vice President Mukhbir Singh said, “we welcome the CSA directive allowing the turban.  Sikh children in Quebec were needlessly being excluded from playing soccer with their peers and we are hopeful that as a result of this decision, they will be able to take part again this summer.”

WSO President Prem Singh Vinning said, “The accommodation of the turban already takes place not just across Canada but across the world.  There is no reason why the turban can’t be accommodated.  We’re glad the CSA has clarified the issue for referees and has hopefully resolved this matter for good.”

Ottawa (le 15 avril 2013) : La World Sikh Organization of Canada (l’Organisation Sikh Mondiale du Canada) accueille fièrement la directive donnée par L'association Canadienne du Soccer (ACS) aux Associations du Soccer et aux arbitres à travers le pays que les joueurs sikh qui portent le turban peuvent être accommodés sur le terrain de soccer. 

Le Secrétaire General  de l’ACS, Peter Montopoli, a conseillé la WSO qu’à la lumière de la décision du Conseil d'Association Internationale du Football (IFAB) permettant les voiles pour les joueurs, et en réponse aux enquêtes par les arbitres, le conseil d'administration de l’ACF a confirmé que les « arbitres peuvent, jusqu'à nouvel ordre, étendre cette décision au port du turbans/patkas/keski »

Un avis de cette décision a été envoyé aux membres provinciaux et territoriaux de l’ACF à travers le Canada vers la fin de la semaine dernière.

La décision de l’ACF ouvre les portes aux joueurs sikhs au Québec qui avait été exclu des ligues de soccer en raison de leur  turban. 

Bien que les ligues de soccer à travers le Canada accommodent déjà le port du turban, il faut signaler qu’en juin 2012, Aneel Samra, 17 ans et d'autres joueurs sikhs dans l'Association du Football Mineur de LaSalle , Québec, avaient été informé qu'ils ne seraient pas autorisés à jouer en raison de leur turban exigés par leur religion. 

Le WSO a travaillé de façon continue avec l’ACS et d’autres parties prenantes pour assurer que le turban soit permis avant la prochaine saison de Soccer.

Le vice-président de la WSO pour le Québec a dit, « Nous accueillons la directive de l’ACS permettant le port du turban.  Des enfants sikhs Québécois étaient inutilement exclus de jouer au football avec leurs pairs et nous avons espoir qu’à la suite de cette décision, ils pourront participer de nouveau cet été»

Le Président de la WSO, Prem Singh Vinning  dit, « L’accommodation du turban a eu lieu non seulement à travers le Canada, mais partout au monde. Il n’y a aucune raison pour laquelle le turban ne peut être accueilli. Nous sommes heureux que l’ACS ait clarifié la question pour les arbitres et espérons d’avoir résolu la question pour toujours.
