Ottawa (April 23, 2016): The World Sikh Organization of Canada condemns the killing of Pakistani-Sikh legislator Sardar Soran Singh. Sardar Soran Singh was the Minister of Minorities in Khyber-Paktunkhwa province, for the ruling Pakistan-Tehreek Insaf party. The Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for the assassination.
Sardar Soran Singh's car was stopped on Friday evening near his home in Pir Baba in Buner district and he was shot and killed by gunmen on motorbikes.
WSO President Mukhbir Singh Singh said, "we are deeply saddened by the senseless murder of Sardar Soran Singh. He was a well-respected politician in Pakistan and a leader in the Sikh community but more so, he was an advocate for the rights of minorities in Pakistan. His killing reflects the constant danger minorities in Pakistan face from extremists like the Taliban. We call on the Pakistan government to ensure that religious minorities are protected and those responsible for this horrific crime are quickly brought to justice. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sardar Soran Singh's family at this very difficult time."
