WSO Condemns Facebook Threats Against MP Ujjal Dosanjh

Ottawa – (April 23, 2010): The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) condemns threatening comments that have been posted on the social-networking website Facebook against MP Ujjal Dosanjh. Any threats, whether direct or indirect to any individual are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. We live in a society where freedom of expression is guaranteed and all individuals have the right to peacefully express their views. Mr. Dosanjh is an elected politician and despite any differences of opinion with his positions, it is unacceptable that any person would make any threats to him. Such comments go against the principles of the Sikh faith and against our values as Canadians.

WSO President Prem Singh Vinning said, “these comments are unfortunate and unacceptable. Differences of opinion can be resolved through dialogue. Threatening comments cannot be tolerated.”

WSO’s senior policy advisor Gian Singh Sandhu said, “comments like those posted on the Facebook page are repulsive. They harm the Sikh image and the community is outraged by them. Those comments are not reflective of the Sikh community.”

The RCMP is reportedly investigating the threatening comments that were posted and the community is encouraged to fully cooperate with the investigation.

The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) is a non-profit organization with a mandate to promote and protect the interests of the Sikh Diaspora, as well as to promote and advocate for the protection of human rights for all individuals, irrespective of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, and social and economic status.
