April is recognized as Sikh Heritage Month in Canada, a time to celebrate and reflect on the rich history, culture, and contributions of Sikh Canadians. On April 30, 2019, the Canadian government enacted the Sikh Heritage Month Act, designating the month of as “Sikh Heritage Month” acknowledging the important role Sikh Canadians have played—and continue to play—in shaping Canada’s social, cultural, and economic fabric.
Sikh Heritage Month coincides with Vaisakhi, one of the most significant dates in the Sikh calendar, marking the founding of the Khalsa in 1699. Together, these observances provide a meaningful opportunity for individuals, schools, workplaces, and communities to engage with Sikh history, values, and traditions.
This resource kit has been developed to assist the community and gurdwaras preparing for and publicizing events related to Vaisakhi. It provides some basic information that you can use to reach out and inform those around you about Vaisakhi and the Sikh community in Canada.
