The World Sikh Organization of Canada is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that represents the interests of Sikhs in Canada. WSO advocates for the rights and interests of Sikhs and all Canadians by promoting human rights, diversity, and social justice. We strive to serve and support Sikh communities across the country through advocacy, outreach, and community development.
Position Overview:
The Regional Officer will play a key role in strengthening WSO’s presence and impact within the Alberta region. This position will focus on community outreach, advocacy, and the development of programs and initiatives that align with WSO’s mission. The Regional Officer will work closely with the regional WSO leadership team, and other members of the WSO staff team to address issues facing the Sikh community, foster relationships with key stakeholders, and represent the organization’s interests at the regional level.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Advocacy and Community Engagement:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for WSO in the region, representing the organization’s views, values, and mission.
- Advocate for the rights of Sikhs and other marginalized communities by engaging with local governments, organizations, and community groups.
- Stay informed on regional issues affecting the Sikh community, including social, political, and legal matters, and ensure WSO’s response is timely and effective.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local Sikh Gurdwaras, community leaders, elected officials, and civil society organizations.
2. Program Development and Delivery:
- Develop and implement regional initiatives that align with WSO’s national priorities, including but not limited to educational/training programs, community events, and campaigns.
- Coordinate and lead regional events, seminars, and workshops that address issuesrelated to Sikh identity, religious freedom, human rights, and diversity.
- Support the development of resources and materials that promote Sikh heritage, values, and social justice initiatives.
3. Communication and Outreach:
- Serve as the spokesperson for WSO at the regional level, speaking at Gurdwaras, community events, meetings, and public forums.
- Create and manage content for regional communication channels, including newsletters, social media, and the WSO website.
- Work to increase visibility and engagement of WSO in the region through various media channels and partnerships.
4. Fundraising and Resource Development:
- Support regional fundraising efforts to ensure the sustainability of WSO’s programs and initiatives.
- Identify and pursue new opportunities for grants, partnerships, and community donations to advance the organization’s work.
5. Administration and Reporting:
- Maintain records of regional activities, including program outcomes, financial reports, and community feedback.
- Report regularly to the regional WSO leadership team and members of the national board (National President, National Senior Vice President, Director of Finance) on the status of regional programs, advocacy efforts, and organizational needs.
- Assist in the preparation of annual reports and strategic plans for the region.
Qualifications:
Required:
- A deep understanding of Sikhi, history, culture, and values.
- Proven experience in community engagement, public relations, and/or advocacy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
- Experience in program development and event management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Google Suite and social media platforms.
- Ability to travel within the region as needed.
Preferred:
- Experience working with non-profit organizations or in a leadership role within the community.
- Familiarity with government policies and issues affecting Sikh Canadians and minority communities.
- Fluency in Punjabi is preferred.
- Experience in fundraising and grant writing.
Compensation:
Range: $70,000 to $80,000 | Flexible based on experience
