In 2013, the Quebec Soccer Federation banned young Sikh children from playing soccer with their turban/keski/patka, with an official stating if they want to play soccer while wearing a turban “they can play in their backyard.”
The WSO began a public advocacy campaign which resulted in the Quebec Soccer Federation being suspended by the Canadian Soccer Association.
The situation was resolved when FIFA expressly authorized the wearing of head coverings. A few days later, the QSF lifted the ban.
Although this was 11 years ago, we are continuing to fight for all Quebecers until they are treated equally and free to practice their faith without fear of discrimination.
