In 1992, in order to help Canadians better understand the human rights violations taking place in Punjab, the WSO sponsored a multi-party parliamentary delegation to visit the region.
The delegation interviewed human rights activists, victims’ families, Sikh leaders, GOI officials, as well as politicians and police officers. They even visited a Punjab prison and saw evidence of torture. They filed individual reports highlighting the atrocities.
With significant pressure, India finally created the National Human Rights Commission in 1993.
