1987: Sikh Refugees in Nova Scotia

In 1987, 174 Sikh refugees had landed in Nova Scotia. They were claiming refugee status as India was not a safe place to be a Sikh. ⁣

They were all detained, and Prime Minister Mulroney recalled parliament to deal with this. WSO members posted bonds amounting to over $750,000 to secure their release. ⁣

In addition, it cost over $500,000 to cover legal costs and their transportation costs to Toronto and Vancouver. WSO pulled the whole community together to make this happen.
