SURREY (NEWS1130) – While many of the local Sikh temples have resources in place, the World Sikh Organization wants them to do more to curb domestic violence.

This comes after the president of Surrey’s Brookside Gurdwara was charged with attempted murder. Baldev Kalsi is still in custody but his title has been taken away.

Jasbir Randhawa with the World Sikh Organization says victims need to have a place where they feel comfortable to speak out and those who are abusing need education.

She says temples can often a safe place. “We know there is a problem and what we are going to do about that problem…the one call for action is early intervention is key.”

“The community at large, we need to get together and find the solution,” she adds. ”I’m really asking the older women, their generation, if they need help this is a confidential service.”

The Lower Mainland chapter is now providing counselling free of charge in Hindi, Punjabi and English.

She says the entire community is shocked over what has happened.

A prayer is being held throughout the weekend at Brookside Gurdwara for Narinder Kalso who is on life support after being attacked on Sunday.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has conduct of the case.
